Dear Yorkshire Society Members, Supporters and Friends
We are reaching out to invite you to take part in a very special opportunity to invest in and be a part of our late Mum – Kay Mellor’s – final film.
LOVE ME SLENDER is based on her sell out musical and much loved ITV drama series Fat Friends which launched the careers of Ruth Jones and James Cordon. The film spotlights a local Yorkshire community as they grapple with relatable problems faced worldwide. It explores the damaging effects of body shaming, cyber bullying and dangerous dieting, but above all the film is about body positivity, self-love and love for each other. With potential support from Screen Yorkshire, it will also showcase all that ‘Gods Own County’ has to offer.
As you might already know, Kay was born and bred in Leeds and was a unique talent in the industry, creating some of the most watched and talked about TV, film and stage shows in the country including Band Of Gold, Fanny & Elvis, The Syndicate, In The Club and Fat Friends. Kay was a lifelong champion of Yorkshire, setting up her Production Company – Rollem – in Leeds before any other drama producer and being responsible for bringing an abundance of work to our region over the past three decades.
The number of people Kay had an impact on is immeasurable. From mentoring writers Sally Wainwright and Russell T Davies, giving Jude Law his first acting job on Families and Samantha Morton her big break on Band of Gold right through to setting up a fellowship for Yorkshire-based, under represented writers. Kay has changed the course of so many lives, and has been instrumental in making the Yorkshire Screen Industry what it is today.
LOVE ME SLENDER really is Kay’s swansong – a celebration of her life’s work and her beloved Yorkshire. It will be studded with star cameos from actors Kay worked with throughout her illustrious career including Lenny Henry, Alison Steadman, Suranne Jones, Timothy Spall, Billie Piper, Brenda Blethyn, Joanna Page, Ray Winstone, as well as many others expressing their appreciation of her and the film.
We aim to be shooting in Yorkshire in Spring 2024 and we are working with the incredible producer Damian Jones (Lady In The Van, Ab Fab The Movie, Dads Army) and Director Juliet May (Miranda, Motherland, Last Tango In Halifax, Call The Midwife) and will be using a loyal, local crew.
We are actively seeking Angel / Private equity investors to join us as part of this incredibly exciting project so would love the opportunity to talk with you further about it.
Please don’t hesitate to get in contact either by email or telephone.
We hope and look forward to hearing from you.
