Discover Yorkshire with Nicky Busby – a series of wonderful walks.

October 24, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

We are delighted to say that Society member, Nicky Busby, has kindly offered to conduct a series of guided walks for those wanting to discover hidden jewels of Yorkshire.

We all have our favourite parts of Yorkshire and we often simply go back to familiar territory when it comes to walking and hiking. Nicky will introduce you to parts of the county you may not know and could be missing out on – this is an opportunity to discover new places, meet new friends and get some exercise in the process.

Nicky’s first walk takes us to the beautiful Washburn Valley, October 20th, 2018.

The Washburn Valley is Yorkshire’s version of Switzerland and is incredibly popular with walkers, bird watchers and anglers. The reservoirs are surrounded by conifer plantations which offer a thriving habitat for wildlife.

It lies between Harrogate and Otley and in 1994 became part of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is steeped in history and is also a haven for many species of wildlife with everything from cuckoos to dragonflies.

The area is well-known for its four reservoirs and dense woodland, so autumn is a perfect time of year to visit, get a breath of fresh air and see the ever-changing colours so why not come along?

ITINERARY.

Date: Saturday 20th October 2018.

The walk will take us around the two middle reservoirs of the Washburn Valley (Fewston and Swinsty). We will be visiting the Washburn Heritage Centre along the route where a Heritage Warden will provide us with some information about the history of the Washburn Valley.

A ‘War in the Washburn Valley’ exhibition will be on display along with a permanent exhibition which is in Fewston Church (next door). You will receive a friendly welcome at the tea room where we will be able to buy light meals and refreshments. See here: www.washburnvalley.org/tea-room

Public conveniences are available at the start/finish and at the heritage centre.
