Hedon formerly becomes Yorkshire Day 2027 hosts
We are delighted to announce that the official Yorkshire Day civic celebration will be hosted by Hedon Town Council in 2027.
The current, and 679th Mayor of Hedon is Councillor Suzie Wright. She attended the event in Goole on 1st August (Yorkshire Day) 2026 where the handing over of the ceremonial Yorkshire Flag to her by Councillor Kevin Flynn, Mayor of Goole, was a feature of the civic lunch.
The flag has been passed from council to council as they have hosted the special day and it features in the day’s event talking pride of place at the head of the parade.
Hedon is a remarkable and historic place, given its first charter by Henry II in 1158 and granted improved ones by King John in 1200 and Henry III in 1248 and 1272. Edward III granted the most important charter which gave the town the right to elect a mayor.
In 1415 Hedon was granted another charter, which let the town have burgesses, other ministers and a mace. This mace is still held in Hedon Town Hall and is now the oldest surviving mace in the country.
The Yorkshire Society convenes the official Yorkshire Day celebration every year and has done so since 1985 when, at a meeting of Local Authorities within the boundary of the old county of Yorkshire i.e. the three ridings and York, the decision to mark Yorkshire Day with an annual civic gathering of Mayors, Lord Mayors, their attendants and other dignitaries ‘in full costume and regalia’ was taken and The Yorkshire Society was appointed to organise the annual event.
The Society awards the honour of hosting the official Yorkshire Day civic celebration to a council who then invite all the mayors of Yorkshire to join them to celebrate the day and provide Yorkshire with a centrepiece to the many Yorkshire Day events across the ‘county.’
Hedon Town Council have hosted Yorkshire Day before, back in 2010 and in 2025 received ‘Spotlight on Yorkshire’ status from the Society.
