Coronavirus forces cancellation of Yorkshire Day 2020 in Rotherham.
Due to the exceptional circumstances imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council have had to make the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Official Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration.
Based on government guidance and the unknown end date of the emergency measures aimed at curbing coronavirus, RMBC felt it had no choice but to cancel this major Society event before plans were too advanced. The Yorkshire Society understands the situation and has sadly accepted this decision. We wish to thank the Council for all the hard work they have put in to date.
The Yorkshire Society’s official Civic event provides a centrepiece for the County’s Yorkshire Day celebrations and has been held, uninterrupted, since 1985. The next Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration will be in York, hosted by City of York Council, in 2021.
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council are bitterly disappointed and remain keen to host the event in future. We are in discussions to identify the next available year. In the meantime, a toolkit is being produced by RMBC to help the people of Yorkshire celebrate Yorkshire Day within any anticipated coronavirus restrictions this year.
NB: The Yorkshire Society is investigating options to hold an alternative Yorkshire Day event this year, subject to the government’s coronavirus guidance nearer the time.
