The Yorkshire Association of Blue Badge Tourist Guides (corporate members and one of our Yorkshire Heritage Guardians) have been running a series of Continual Professional Development Zoom Lectures for their members over lockdown.
Whilst many of their virtual lectures are hosted by Yorkshire Blue Badge Guides, their next event is a talk by Yorkshire historian Mark Saville on Yorkshire Markets, which takes place on 25th February 2021 at 2pm and they have kindly invited members of The Yorkshire Society to join them.
Details of the talk’s contents are:
Yorkshire Markets through history
The hustle and bustle of the marketplace was at the centre of almost all towns and villages. Initially they were held around churches on a Sunday, but when crowds grew large enough, a market charter was applied for it to be held in a regulated marketplace on a certain day or days and over longer periods at feast times.
This talk traces how markets developed in Yorkshire looking at a wide range of towns – from the smartest (Beverley), the largest (Doncaster) to where the bell ringer still announces the start of the market (Knaresborough & Ripon) and the grand Victorian Market Halls (Halifax & Leeds). The talk also features more latter-day market halls and the popularity of today’s Farmer’s Markets.
This is an informative talk which takes a different look at what visitors have loved about the market through history.
The talk is fully illustrated with photographs and film.
